Roof risks that are specific to Friendswood
Friendswood is a city of roughly 41,000 just east of Pearland, founded by Quaker settlers in the 1890s and known for its wooded lots and established neighborhoods. Those same features shape what goes wrong with roofs here:
- Trees and limbs. Mature pines and oaks overhang many homes. In thunderstorms and tropical systems, falling limbs puncture shingles and crack decking — one of the most common emergency calls.
- Debris-clogged valleys and gutters. Pine needles and leaves dam up water in valleys and gutters, which backs water under the shingles and into the soffit or wall.
- Wind from the Gulf. Friendswood is closer to Galveston Bay than Pearland, so tropical storms and hurricanes often hit with stronger winds — lifting shingles, ridge caps and flashing.
- A mix of roof ages. Older neighborhoods near the city center sit alongside newer subdivisions, so you'll find everything from 30-year-old roofs to recent replacements.
Clear Creek, flooding and your roof
Clear Creek runs along Friendswood's northern edge, and the city saw severe flooding during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Flooding is a separate problem from roofing — flood damage is covered (if at all) by a flood policy, not your homeowners roof coverage — but the same storms that flood streets often bring the wind and falling limbs that damage roofs. After a major storm, document roof damage and flood damage separately for your insurers.
When a tree comes down on your roof
- Get everyone out of rooms under the damage. Watch for sagging ceilings.
- If the tree is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility.
- Photograph everything from a safe distance.
- Call a tree service to remove the limb, then a roofer to cover the opening — or call us first and we'll connect you with a roofer who can advise on order of work.
The roofer will cover the hole with a battened tarp, then plan decking and shingle repair. See emergency roof tarping for what proper coverage looks like.
Leaks without a storm
If your Friendswood roof is leaking on an ordinary rainy day, start by checking the valleys and gutters above the stain for packed debris; it's the most common local cause. Cracked pipe boots and failed flashing are next. Our roof leak repair page covers how a roofer traces the source. After hail or high wind, read storm & hail damage repair first.
